What we have achieved

A great deal in eight years. Here are some of the many ideas and activities we have either organised ourselves or given strong backing to:

  • A “community chest” from which we have given money to help nearly 20 voluntary groups in the town
  • A film society which is still growing after four years
  • A year-long series of 40 events to celebrate the 500th anniversary of John Skelton – a former Rector of St. Mary’s and childhood tutor of Henry VIII
  • Diss Community Bank – a branch of Norfolk Credit Union, which helps people to save and makes low-interest loans to people the big banks simply ignore
  • Provided new computers for the Citizens’ Advice Bureau
  • Achieving Cittaslow status for Diss – one of only a handful of towns in the UK recognised internationally for the way we care about the environment, our history, our local foods and how we celebrate the richness and diversity of our community
  • The re-paving of Madgett’s Walk beside the Mere
  • Food festivals, craft fairs and a literary festival
  • The Tom Paine festival to mark the 200th anniversary of the death of this great radical thinker who worked in Diss – an ambitious programme which has been showered with national, regional and local awards.
  • Successfully applied for major funding from the European Union which allowed us to employ a full-time coordinator to promote the local economy, tourism, cultural events and the signage round the town, including the Cittaslow “Snail trail”
