Silly Asses & Formidable Females

Review

Jeeves & Wooster in Perfect Nonsense
New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich

Not Wooster & Jeeves, you notice, with the redoubtable butler in charge as ever.
Matthew Carter is a lanky and glowingly asinine Bertie.
Joseph Chance lacks a certain gravitas as Jeeves. Missing is that sense of an ocean liner guiding a tug. Also that ability to imply huge disapproval by a “Yes, sir.”
But he does silence a querulous dog with a look; and ties a mean bow tie.
He and Robert Goodale double as silly asses and females who would make hell’s foundations quiver.
At one point Joseph Chance plays male and female characters at the same time.
Gussie Fink-Nottle, Madeline Bassett, Sir Watkin Bassett, Dahlia Travers, Roderick Spode, Constable Oates – the world of P.G. Wodehouse has never been so well re-created by three actors.
The show has the fun of the lighter side of the Edinburgh Fringe. It reminds us that many of our Cabinets have been peopled by those from backgrounds such as these.
