Arthur Miller almost called his play And Cain Goes Forth. The broken apple tree may have a lost Eden connotation.
It also recalls the wartime song about not sitting under it; but here the serviceman does not come marching home.
Greek and Ibsen influences have been identified in Miller’s work, with the sins of the fathers and nemesis for corruption. But the striking new slant is a performance by an all black cast.
The play suggests a level of affluence that black people were unlikely to have at that time. They were more likely to be on latrine detail.
But the natural passion, warmth, humour and dignity of black actors gives the play new dimensions.
Their vocal talents and the work of dialect coach Mark Langley make you forget this is a British cast.
The play runs until Saturday 21 February.
